Don't Get Fooled Again ! - June 19,2009
It's been over 15 years since a serious examination of Health care reform was on the agenda. At that time the Insurance Industry and allies within the "health care complex" put on a full court press to defeat attempts at altering the current "health for profit" system. This was accomplished thru a combination of efforts, including extensive lobbying and financial contribution to legislators. A propaganda campaign featuring adds profiling a fictional couple, "Harry and Louise" were launched. It provided a false description of the reforms which effectively distorted the issues. Those leading the reform efforts were "demonized". These actions combined with assurances from the industry that it would impose reform measures successfully derailed government actions. It was such a convincing campaign that discussion of health care reforms has sat on a back burner ever since being deemed too controversial.
> However it has provided ample opportunity for measuring the advantages of the industry's programs. To paraphrase a question made famous by the late President Ronald Reagan, With regards to health care are you better off today than you were 15 years ago? Most would answer with a resounding NO, as polling indicates a clear majority of Americans believe it's time for an overhaul of the manner in which health care is provided in this country.
> They realize that health care cost are straining family budgets to the breaking point, They've experienced the fact that in the last eight years health care premiums have increased four times faster than wages. For a majority access to health care is dependent on the security of their employment, therefore a shift in working status has far reaching consequences for the family's medical well being. They realize that a catastrophic medical situation could devour everything one has spent a lifetime building. It's estimated a health care related bankruptcy occurs in America every 30 seconds. Those having health coverage find that increases in deductibles make it difficult to use except in extreme situations. Instead of utilizing the cost saving advantages of preventive medical care most opt to wait until they have no other choice before accessing their coverage. Many fear having their insurance provider deny services, thus abandoning them when their situation is most critical.
> Along with the stresses placed on the family our current health care system has a crippling effect on business. Out of control health care cost consume much of the profit margin within American industry. It undercuts the competitive ability of American business within the world economic community. The fiscal health of companies is directly connected to their ability to absorb rising health care cost. Small business in particular cannot retain quality employees because they are unable to afford health benefits essential to working Americans. A recent report by the consulting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers estimates business related health care expense will increase by 9% next year alone.
> There are over 46 million Americans who are uninsured in this country. With the current economic climate that figure will continue to increase. It's estimated that an additional 9 million Americans have fallen into the ranks of the uninsured over the last 8 years. The cost of emergency room care necessary for this group is being shouldered by everyone. Beyond these economic justifications for reform there lies the moral question. In the greatest nation on the planet should basic health care be considered a privilege or a right available to all? The United States is the only industrial nation where elected leaders are guaranteed excellent coverage at taxpayer expense while millions of their fellow citizens find themselves without the most basic safety net. The majestic words "the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" rings hollow when one faces a medical crisis without health care security.
> President Obama has issued a clear call for health care reform. After years of waiting on the" health care for profit complex" to initiate change the American people elected him expecting the fulfillment of this campaign commitment. In anticipation of Congressional action the President has outlined 3 basic principles that are the cornerstone of reform. They are 1) reduce cost, 2) guarantee choice, and 3) ensure that all Americans have quality health care because nothing less will constitute genuine reform of our broken system. The President has provided the leadership, but it remains to be seen if the political will is available to complete the task. As Congress debates the details of health care reform, supporters of the status quo will again resort to subterfuge and misrepresentation in an effort to confuse the issues. Americans reviewing the history will realize that the arguments against reform are sounding all too familiar. America cannot afford a repeat of that history, because we're currently experiencing the fruits of past inaction. It's time for meaningful health care reform, so any resulting legislation must include the President's core principles, not only because it will strengthen our nation, but it's the right thing to do!
I deny his charge because until I read Mr. Clark's piece I was not aware of the event he highlighted. I didn't receive an invitation to his event or else it got lost in the mail. I never mentioned Pickens or "Tax Day", however I did specify the names of the speakers on the program at the event I called into question. Those names included Sanford, Bauer, DeMint, Barrett and Thomas among others. I'm not positive but I believe it's probably been well over a year since this group of distinguished career politicians appeared jointly at a meeting within the borders of Pickens County. I probably would not have received an invitation to that gathering either but it would have garnered media coverage. Mr. Clark's response to my piece in the Pickens Sentinel would imply he read it and therefore should have been aware of those names. He even made a one sentence reference to it by acknowledging that "one Republican officeholder was booed" on Friday in Greenville. He simply forgot to credit Rep. Barrett by name.
Mr. Clark placed a lot of emphasis on the fact that his 'Tea Party" in Pickens was not a Republican Party function. Therefore in responding he chose to ignore the central question I asked. How could one holding "conservative" views on taxes and spending support and applaud the very individuals who brought our State and Nation to the economic and budgetary crisis before us? If Mr. Clark or others participating in his event on Wednesday (4-15-09) also attend the larger party on Friday (4-17-09) at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville there would appear to be an inconsistency between their talk and their walk. If they did not then my comments had no relevance to them.
In an effort at full disclosure I admit to attending the other gathering that Friday at the Bi-Lo Center. It was promoted as a "Save Our School's Rally" designed to call on Gov. Sanford to accept stimulus money available for support of public education. It was sponsored by the Greenville County Democratic Party and I attended at their invitation. In doing so I identified with it's purpose and speakers. These were individuals whom I believe have held a consistent position with regards to the value of public education for the children of our state. In fact I was honored to be counted among those speaking that night. Could Mr. Clark make the same association in regards to the Friday night" Tea Party" speakers in light of the record they and their party have exhibited while governing our state for the last decade?
Mr. Clark's ending his response with a litany of issues he opposes was revealing. It included abortion, attacks on gun owner's rights, blame America foreign policy(?) and President Obama's alleged attempt to turn America into a socialist nation. All of which are issues that could be debated, but I thought the "Tea Parties" were about runaway government spending. That's an issue with which the speakers at Friday night's cotillion certainly have a lot of experience. If Mr. Clark's view are representative of the attendees at the" Tea Parties" then it would appear one can bring whatever complaint tops your list. Don't worry it'll be served, the only question is whether it's accompanied by sugar or lemon.
THANK YOU! - May 8, 2009
I had intended to send this much earlier but April has proven to be a very busy month for the PCDP. WITH MY APOLOGIES FOR IT BEING LATE let me say thank you to those who were involved in our efforts at the Azalea Festival. The list includes Ken King, Renee Cruell, her son Esan Cruell (a fifth grader at Forest Acres), and Rick Bailey all of whom spent time at the Festival handing out literature. Esan informed me that his class had just finished studying the G.I.Bill which was featured on the flyer we were distributing. He was going to lobby for extra credit at school for participating. I think he should get it! Renee provided badges which read DEMOCRATS IN BLOOM AT THE AZALEA FESTIVAL. It was a great idea and we wore them proudly.
Thank you to everyone who wrote a letter in support of our position. There were several very insightful letters, some of which did not make publication, but they accomplished their purpose. I particularly want to thank our friend Ken Campbell, the Chair of the Oconee Democratic Party for his Letter to the Editor. I believe it was significant that when someone outside Pickens County of Ken's stature voiced their opinion it highlighted the potential PR disaster looming before the Chamber of Commerce which impacted their decisions. His actions illustrated the spirit of support and working toward common goals that I have found prevalent among Democrats across the 3RD Congressional District. It's an attitude that makes me proud to be associated with Democrats across our region and why I believe we will eventually prevail.
Thank you to Gareth Jones, the owner of Corner Technologies who withdrew his sponsorship of the Festival in support of our right to become a sponsor of the event. He also provided a table, chairs, ladder and bathroom facilities on festival day for our use. He has a location in both Pickens and Walhalla and I hope you have an opportunity to express your appreciation for his support of basic fairness.
The owners of Sapphire Builders who rented us a prime location on Main Street for half the cost of a vendor booth from the Chamber because they believed we had a right to be there deserve our thanks. Also, thank you to everyone who has made a financial contribution to the PCDP to off set the expense we incurred with this activity. I've not seen the final amount, but your sacrifice is appreciated.
Thank you to members of the Media for attempting to provide balanced coverage of the controversy involved. In my view the value of the "FOURTH ESTATE" as a reliable source for informing the public was illustrated on this occasion. Without the coverage we could have never achieved our goals.
Last but certainly not least (in my mind), I want to thank my wife, Denise Painter, who has worked in the printing industry in the past and put those skills at our disposal. She handled the layout and typesetting of the flyer, went to Kinko's in Greenville at 2:00AM Festival morning ( yes morning while I was in bed asleep) to print the flyers and took pictures of our location. Those pictures will be sent to the State Democratic Party to possibly be placed on their website so our friends throughout the State Party will realize what Democrats are doing in Pickens County. They will also be on our MySpace and FaceBook Pages.
I can only speak for my experiences but I had very few people who simply refused the flyer when offered. We distributed close to 300 flyers during the event. We had probably about 15 people stop by our location and chat and several offered contact information. My most memorable moment of the day occurred when a gentleman who was probably in his mid 50's to early 60's stopped at our table. He looked at the materials, picking up a flyer. Ken King and I were standing there so I extended my hand and introduced myself. He didn't actually respond but reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet. He opened it and looked inside as though he were studying it. Being as close as I was I also could see the contents. It appeared he had a $5 bill and a few $1's. He pulled $1 out offered it to me and simply said "we need to elect more Democrats" in as serious a manner as one could. Being the Chair of a County Party I NEVER turn down money, agreed and thanked him, offered him some bottled water, which he refused. I never got his name but remembered the sincerity in his voice. He was a man of few but prophetic words. I believe this festival was an effort well worth pursuing and look forward to our doing other activities of this nature in the future. Again THANK YOU for all your support of The Pickens County Democratic Party.
Was the Mad Hatter in Attendance
Due to the extensive news coverage being received probably everyone
is aware of the "Tea Parties" that were held across the upstate last
week. Those orchestrating them have made a great deal of drawing
comparisons to that famous action by the "Sons of Liberty" in Boston
prior to the American Revolution. They claim their purpose is to draw
attention to the excessive spending and huge debt being placed on
future generations. These events are intended as a statement in
opposition to government failure. They have drawn large crowds which is
not surprising. Any time people have an opportunity to rail against
taxes and perceived wasteful spending they'll jump at the chance to
participate. It's a part of our DNA as freedom loving Americans that
stretches back to the "Whiskey Rebellion" in the 1790's. Finding
someone in favor of higher taxes and wasteful spending is about as
likely as locating an individual against the welfare of children. What
sane individual would take that position? The real questions are not if
we stand against something, but rather is supporting goverment action
going to benefit our citizens and who can bring that to pass?
Given the fervor and passion exhibited by the folks attending these events and their desire to stand on principle I must admit an amazement upon reading the list of those addressing the gatherings. It reads like a rollcall of S.C. Republican Party royalty, Gov. Sanford, Lt. Gov. Bauer, Sen. DeMint, Rep. Barrett, and State Sen. Thomas to mention a few. Upon reading this list one could ask, are these gatherings meant to emulate the Boston" Tea Party" or are they more reflective of Alice's "Tea Party" held during her Adventures in Wonderland? It requires a suspension of reality and stepping into an imaginary rewriting of history to view these individuals as defenders of efficient government and conservative monetary policy.
Once we step into this imaginary world it becomes easy to forget that it was only 3 short months ago that President Bush relinquished responsibility for managing the current economic crisis. One can overlook the fact it was his Sec.of the Treasury who created the controversial TARP program that so many of those attending the Tea Party's love to rail against. That same Treasury Sec., who was a product of Wall Street, gave Wall Street institutions over half the TARP funding without any sense of accountability or long range planning. Upon assuming office in January President Obama found himself forced to commit to a program in disarray and floundering with no direction or accept the wasteful losses of his predecessor as permanent. Fortunately the Obama Administration revised the context of the program, requiring accountability and providing firmer government oversight. There was also a shift in the focus of government involvement as it related to economic recovery. Instead of just observing the steady decline each month the Obama Administration instituted a phased plan designed to stimulate economic growth. Actions that a majority of Americans have enthusiasticaly supported. Yet each of the afore mentioned tea party members have stood with President Bush over the course of his years in office, staunchly defended his stewardship of the nation while providing support for his economic policies in Congress over the last decade.
This Alice merrily skipping through Wonderland approach to governing that was indicative of Washington during the Bush years also took root in S.C. The Governor has blamed our current State budget crisis on the Legislature and that Republican dominated body points fingers back at the Governor. In the last week Speaker Harrell and Sen. Larry Martin have each taken the Governor to task for the draconian budget cuts being made. The fact is there's enough blame for the fiasco facing state government so that everyone in leadership gets a cup full. The reality is Republicans leaders across our state have skipped along hand in hand for almost a decade ignoring serious warning signs while arguing over who gets which seat at the table during their little tea party in Columbia. Unfortunately the citizens of S.C. are now having to drink their brew and it's leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth. To paraphrase the Queen of Hearts," OFF with their POLITICAL Heads. It's clearly time for leadership change in both branches of state goverment. I understand the anger and frustration exhibited by those in attendance at these " Tea Party" events. My confusion is how they can reconcile the past actions of their guest speakers with their own principles. Unless of course something other than tea is being served at these parties which would help dull one's memory.
Here in the Upstate Democrats are on the march. This last weekend Democrats in Greenville held a rally on Friday supporting public education, our Democratic friends in Oconee were meeting on Saturday and Democrats in Pickens were engaging the public at the Azalea Festival. At these and other gatherings Democrats throughout S.C. are preparing with anticipation for next years election campaigns. We believe we are "right" on the issues and as the public becomes frustrated with the posturing on the part of Gov. Sanford and other GOP leaders it will continue it's move in our direction. Years of irresponsible Republican leadership in S.C. will hasten the day that our citizens again turn to Democrats to get things done. The responsibility falls on us to prepare so that when the opportunities are presented we can capitalize effectively.
With these possibilities before us this year's State Convention becomes even more crucial. There are important decisions to be made at this gathering. I encourage each individual who was elected as a delegate from Pickens County last year to make every effort to be in attendance. We are entitled to 40 Delegates and 40 Alternates at this years meeting. We hope to have as large a compliment as possible so that Pickens County and Upstate concerns will be represented. Should you be aware of anyone interested in attending please have them contact me. A group will be meeting Saturday morning (4-25-09) @ 6:00AM in the K-Mart parking lot in Easley. If anyone needs a ride or simply wishes to travel with us please contact me or meet us there.
Among the decisions to be made Saturday at the convention will be choosing the leadership that will guide us through this upcoming election campaign. As I've indicated above I believe our Party has a bright future. It becomes crucial that leadership at the state level be capable of steering our party towards that distant horizon even though it's not yet clearly visible. We need leadership that understands where we've been, how far we've come and the distance we still need to travel. With this in mind I'm proud to announce my support for our current State Party Chair Carol Fowler. I would encourage my friends and fellow delegates to help assure that our Party continues the gains we've seen over the last 2 year by joining in working for her re-election.
Under her leadership our Party out polled the Republicans in last years Presidential Primary. It is to be expected that after such success other state's will be challenging S.C.'s status as the" first primary state in the south". Having as State Party Chair some one of Carol's stature and reputation within the national organization will be an asset in protecting this unique role. Those connections will be helpful as our National Executive Committee Members and Congressional Delegation work to protect this privilege we currently enjoy.
I appreciate her commitment to recruiting staff that can depended on independently. This is often an overlooked asset but becomes a necessity for Counties such as Pickens where Democrats struggle as a minority. Those of us in the Upstate are not daunted by the underdog status as we've learned to fight smart but it's helpful when there is confidence in those working out of Columbia. The quality of the staff is a direct reflection of the leadership and we are fortunate as S.C. Democrats. When the Pickens Chamber attempted to force our organization out of the Azalea Festival I initially spoke with 4 individuals concerning a response. They included Ken Campbell from Oconee, both Jay Parmley and Cherie Mabrey with the State Party and Carol. Each of which offered sound advise concerning a course of action. Over the last 2 years I've called upon the State Party for assistance on several occasions and never been disappointed in the response.
Carol has demonstrated a willingness to lead in calling the Governor to task for being irresponsible. In doing so I believe she has inspired Democrats across the state and provided the spark needed to assure the Party didn't become complacent after last November. The quick response of the State Party in conjunction with the Greenville County Party to Republican attempts to close primary elections illustrates a recent example of assuming the offense, just the leadership we need. I would love to see our State Convention re-elect her by aclamation as a show of unity.
Again let me encourage each of you to make plans to join in Columbia on Saturday (4-25-09) for the convening of our State Democratic Party. It's an honor and a privalege to be entrusted with the responsibility for the future of this great party. I know Pickens County Democrats will not take that charge lightly. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM at the Columbia Convention Center with the convention convening at 10:00 AM. There are many exciting activities over the weekend so come be part of the renaissance taking place across S.C. I look forward to seeing each of you there.
PCDP Headquarte
I am pleased to announce that the PCDP will have a temporary
headquarters during the Azalea Festival on Saturday (4-18-09). I have
been awaiting the finalizing of details before making the announcement.
Once it became apparent the Chamber was refusing to acknowledge the
contradiction in their booth policy we moved in another direction. Our
only other recourse was legal which clearly will not solve the
immediate problem. We negotiated a fair market rental with a landlord
who believes everyone should have a right to promote their legitimate
organization. The owners were specific that had Republicans contacted
them first, they would have been provided the same opportunity. We
thank the owners for their balanced approach.
This is more than simply a political stunt or an "in your face" reaction to the Chamber's obstinance. Although if accused I would have to plead guilty on both counts. It will allow us to accomplish what we intended all along. We will be seen, heard and available for those who wish to explore possible involvement with the Democratic Party. At the same time others may avoid us if they so desire.
Every small business begins as an idea. It's creator nurtures it as their dream. Eventually they ask the question crystallized by Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in the 1968 Presidential campaign, Why Not? We have been fortunate enough to live to begin to see Dr. King's dream of a society based on character, not skin color begin to unfold. Unfortunately the PCDP is not prepared either in an organizational or financial way to maintain a permanent headquarters at this time. However, I envision a day when the PCDP will have a functional permanent office in Pickens County, a location from which we can strengthen our organization, support candidates in the manner they deserve and weigh in on the issues impacting our citizens. Until that day this location will serve as a momentary image of what could be. We will decorate the windows of this building but as my friend Ken Campbell of Oconee mentioned in an e-mail just this morning this entire incident serves notice that the Democratic Party will not be wallflowers particularly when it comes to free speech and other issues.
If you are available tomorrow come join us at 112-C Main St., Pickens. Our location sits between Corner Technologies and D&T Tanning Salon. It sits across the street from the Pickens Sentinel as you are leaving Pickens going towards Oconee. We will be offering complimentary bottled water, information and if necessary voter registration opportunities. Enclosed is a copy of the flyer we will have available.
All of these activities are possible through your generous contributions. If you cannot join us tomorrow please consider a monetary donation so that we may continue to work within the community to bring about change.
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, and meeting potential Democrats in Pickens County.

WAS I MISLEADING? -- May 14, 2009
To paraphrase the late Dale Earnhardt, "if the crowd is hissing, booing and complaining about you, you must be doing something, otherwise they ignore you". Evidently I touched a nerve with my recently published comments about the "Tea Parties". Case in point Mr. Weldon H. Clark Jr., Treasurer of the Pickens County Tax Payers Association felt a need to respond directly in several different papers. I appreciate Mr. Clark's thoughts if for no other reason than it confirms someone read my piece. I do however take exception to his clever attempt to accuse me of misrepresenting an event that occurred in the town of Pickens on "Tax Day" (4-15-09) at noon.I deny his charge because until I read Mr. Clark's piece I was not aware of the event he highlighted. I didn't receive an invitation to his event or else it got lost in the mail.
Was the Mad Hatter in Attendance? - April 23, 2009
The real questions are not if
we stand against something, but rather is supporting goverment action
going to benefit our citizens and who can bring that to pass?Given the fervor and passion exhibited by the folks attending these events and their desire to stand on principle I must admit an amazement upon reading the list of those addressing the gatherings.
Democratic Party State Convention : A Call to Service (Saturday 4-25-09)
This is an exciting time to be a Democrat as our party has come out of the last election cycle with a greater sense of commitment to the shared goals that bind us. We not only celebrate the national accomplishments of the Obama / Biden victory, but enjoy the confidence of the American people as illustrated by their returning Democratic majorities to both Houses of Congress. We experienced Democratic gains in states where Republicans have long held sway. We only need to look across either state border for examples. Within S.C. we realized an increase in Democratic support in every county last November. There were Democratic gains in the General Assembly for the 3rd straight election cycle in '08. If there were any doubts about this potential shifting of public confidence just consider the Republican efforts since the election to stem the tide by attempting to deter voter participation through legal and legislative gerrymandering.
PCDP Headquarters - April 17, 2009
